“DISTANCIA” by Erik Otto in Roma neighborhood :)(:
Creative(s) Perspectives
“Distancia”, an exhibition by Californian artist Erik Otto, will open tomorrow at 19:30 hrs in Chihuahua 143, in the Roma neighborhood of Mexico City, with a collection of abstract paintings and installations created specifically for an exhibition space that will soon be demolished.
It is common to hear stories about Mexican artists going abroad searching for opportunities, however through “Distance” – his first project in Mexico -, Erik Otto tells the story of an American guy who came searching for opportunities in our country and is beginning to find them.
Taking over the last floor of a building as his venue and without any representation or support of the local galleries or institutions, “Distance” is an exercise that turns a ruined building into an exhibition space of five rooms with paintings and installations organised such a disconcerting manner that we wonder whether the protagonists are the artworks or the building itself.
With an amazing ephemeral tone, this proposal invites us to transform a building into a temporary gallery and distance ourselves from the cultural conventions of the Roma neighborhood… at least for a few hours.
